Grapevine Fires by Death Cab for Cutie

It’s the last Sunday of the month, time for putting the ‘fun’ in funeral once more. This month is time for another musical edition!

I’m going to admit it, I absolutely adore Death Cab for Cutie, who could hate a band named after a Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band song? It’s in Magical Mystery Tour! Apparently my boyfriend, who objects strongly when I play ‘I will follow you into the dark’ at full volume and sing along. My singing is BAD (seriously – it’s actually AWFUL) but his objection to Death Cab is especially strong because they are ‘so whiny’, so the band are a huge guilty pleasure for me.

One of my favourite tracks is Grapevine Fires, and it’s earned it’s place here thanks to the lyrics:

We bought some wine and some paper cups
Near your daughter’s school when we picked her up
And drove to a cemetery on a hill
On a hill

And we watched the plumes paint the sky gray
As she laughed and danced through the field of graves
And there I knew it would be alright
That everything would be alright

This conjures up some really beautiful imagery for me. Sadly, it’s not replicated in the official video, although it’s a stunning animation:

I hope you enjoy the song as much as I do. It seems very appropriate at this time of year, although the weather has been pretty wet in the UK this summer. If you live in an area where wildfires are a risk I hope you stay safe!
